Scuola Ulisse was established in 1998 with the aim of promoting Italian language and Italian culture in the wider world. It is located in the beautiful late baroque centre of Catania, a seaside city on the island of Sicily, which offers infinite cultural, natural, and architectonic riches.
The school offers students not only courses taught by highly skilled and experienced teachers, but also the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Italian and the local culture through leisure activities in the lively city centre. The school offers courses for students at all levels, from beginners wishing to learn the basics of a new language to more advanced students who want to develop and refine their language skills. Trained in modern techniques of teaching Italian as a second language, our teachers tailor their lessons to the needs of each student, and create a lively atmosphere for learning.
Our courses vary also according to class size and duration. As regards class size, students can choose between classes of 6 -10 students, smaller group classes of 3-5 students, and personal one-to-one classes. Regarding course duration, a STANDARD course lasts three weeks, and consists of 45 contact hours, while a PLUS course lasts three weeks, and consists of 60 contact hours. Students’ abilities will first be assessed in a pre-course placement test.
At the end of the course, students’ progress will be evaluated and certified in a test, conforming to the standards of the Common European Framework which measures students’ levels from beginner, A1 and A2, to intermediate, B1 and B2, and advanced, C1 and C2. Students in groups are also encouraged to participate in the free extra-curricular activities which the school organizes, with the aim of stimulating language learning and socialization through participating in the city’s various cultural events. Scuola Ulisse is located in the beautiful late baroque centre of Catania, a seaside city on the island of Sicily.
It is to be found in a charming eighteenth-century street, Via Crociferi, which the locals call the city's 'lounge' for its particularly beautiful baroque churches and buildings. Nearby one also finds the cathedral, the Benedictine monastery (now home to various faculties of the university), and the colourful fish market, heart of the working city. Inside, the school and its classrooms are welcoming and light, and equipped with air conditioning and internet connections for students to use.
Scuola Ulisse also offers students accommodation, either in a local ‘bed and breakfast’ or small hotel or, at a lower cost, in an apartment. The apartments have kitchens and bathrooms, are well-served by public transport, and offer single and double rooms, or the personal use of a whole apartment.
